Version v2 current · History (2)
Serves 4
Ingredients
- 2 egg
- 240 ml milk
- 100 g sugar
- 2 ml vanilla extract
- 115 g butter
- 8 bread (thick slices about 2 cm, day-old; whole-grain toast or baguette)
- 30 ml maple syrup
- 300 g mixed berries (frozen, warmed, or fresh if in season)
Steps
- In a wide shallow bowl, whisk together egg (2), milk (240 ml), sugar (100 g), and vanilla extract (2 ml) until the sugar dissolves.
- Heat a pan over medium and melt a quarter of the butter (115 g).
- Dip bread (8) in the custard, letting each slice soak ⏲ 30–45 seconds per side until saturated but still holding together.
- Fry 2 slices at a time until golden brown on both sides, ⏲ 3 minutes per side, adding the next quarter of the butter between batches. Keep finished slices warm on a wire rack in a low oven (about 90°C) while you cook the rest.
- Serve right away with maple syrup (30 ml) and mixed berries (300 g).
